Overview
Description of Unit:
This unit will cover the history of immigration in the United States. It will also cover the reasons why people immigrate to different countries (push and pull factors). This unit will also cover different cultures that have immigrated into the United States. Students will learn about various cultural experiences and traditions of diverse families in the United States. Furthermore, students will understand different experiences and difficulties that immigrants face when settling in another country.

Justification for Topic:
I chose this topic because of the cultural diversity that is present in our country and in our schools. Moreover, I have personal stories of the experiences that many immigrants faced since my parents immigrated here in the United States from the Philippines. This unit promotes civic competence as they become knowledgeable of the cultural diversity around them. By knowing the history and background of immigration, students will be able to be aware of the cultural diversity around them in their neighborhood and in school. Students will also learn to make decisions for the common good as they understand the affects of immigration, and how immigration paves the way for cultural diversity. The unit will also prompt students to assume civic responsibilities to change society as they study several issues in regards to immigration on the local and national level.
