- Common Core ELA Standards - RF3.4c – Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.
Objectives:
- Students will learn about current immigration patterns into the United States.
- Students will learn about several difficulties that many immigrants face trying to migrate to another country.
- Students will write down the main idea and facts of a news article.
Materials:
- Current Event Article
- Main Idea & Supporting Details Graphic Organizer
Lesson Development:
I DO -
- Show students a data map of immigrants migrating to North America in the current year. Introduce to the students that hundreds of immigrants enter into the United States everyday, and that immigration is still a current issue. Review push and pull factors by having students turn and talk to a partner to discuss why immigrants migrate to different countries. Talk about how violence and problems in a home country is one of the reasons immigrants migrate. Introduce that in today's lesson we will learn about several issues that many immigrants, especially women and children face in looking for a better life.
- Read the first section of the Honduran First Lady article. Emphasize the importance of writing down supporting details and main idea of the text while reading is important in comprehending and understanding the text. Model how to fill out the Main Idea and Supporting Details Graphic Organizer, explicitly explaining how to determine the main idea and supporting details of the Introduction of the article.
WE DO -
- Read the next 2 sections of the Honduran First Lady article. Model one point that can be placed in the Main Idea and Supporting Details Graphic Organizer. Have students break out into table groups to work on providing the main idea and supporting details of the 2nd and 3rd section of the article.
- While students are working together, walk around the room to scaffold student understanding of the 2nd and 3rd section of the article. After table groups have finished filling out the graphic organizer on 2nd and 3rd section of the article, have 2-3 students share their responses.
YOU DO -
- Read the last section of the Honduran First Lady article. Have students independently fill out a Main Idea and Supporting Details Graphic Organizer for the last section. While students are working independently, individually conference with students to check for understanding.
